However, it takes some basic technical knowledge to understand some requirements before you decide to purchase an MST hub. See below for a list of requirements.

Know What You Need – MST stands for Multi-Stream Transport and only supports video graphic cards that are compatible with DisplayPort (DP) outputs, and there are currently two common DP versions, DP 1.2 and DP 1.4, hence it is important to check if your computer comes with a DisplayPort output.MST is NOT Guaranteed – Although MST hub can help extend or duplicate (mirror) your desktop to many displays, it is NOT GUARANTEED. Depending on the type of graphic card used, you need to check the specifications of the graphic card to ensure it supports DisplayPort or DP Alt mode before you make the purchase.Bandwidth Matters – When you decide to purchase an MST hub to achieve desktop extension of your desktop to other displays, you need to know the total bandwidth your graphic cards can support because MST hub splits (shares) the bandwidth to extend or duplicate your desktop to many displays. If the total bandwidth is reached, then there may be one or more monitors that will not display the image. For example, DisplayPort 1.4 supports total bandwidth of 32.4Gbps.Change Display Settings – There are occasions when your displays go blank or images start to flicker after you plug in the MST hub. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean the MST hub is a defective item. As mentioned above, bandwidth matters when you decide to use an MST hub to extend your screen, but you need to know how to change your display setting to release the bandwidth to achieve a multi-display extension. Number of Displays

MST hubs cannot increase the number of displays a video graphic card can support. Regardless of the number of display connectors built into your video card, each video card has a limited number of displays it can support.Most AMD and NVIDIA video graphic cards support up to 4 displays, while Intel ones support up to 3 displays.AMD RX560/ RX570/ Radeon 7200 Series video cards only support up to 2 displays.When you use a laptop computer, the total number of displays includes the laptop’s own built-in screen. (External monitors+laptop screen=Total Displays)
